ABOUT US

The PHX Project: Public History Xploration is a project-based unit in which students collaborate to research, design, and deliver a new learning experience that connects the local history of Phoenix to broader themes of U.S. or global history. We seek to represent the rich diversity of historical narratives in our community, while making those stories accessible to teachers, students, and the general public. This year, we have chosen the word "mosaic" to represent our project, which highlights the impact of diverse populations and individuals on our Arizona communities. We have created a Reading Packet and Document-Based Group Assignment for students called Mosaic: Immigration, Migration, and Community Formation in Arizona.

Our Project
Mosaic: Immigration, Migration, and Community Formation in Arizona

Leading up to this year's project, our class spent weeks studying public history projects throughout the country. As we began to focus on themes of immigration, migration, and community formation, we wanted to highlight the potential of individual and family stories as a valuable tool in the learning of history. We visited the Heard Museum's Away from Home exhibit as a powerful example of the blending of individual stories, local events, and national history. Finally, in our own work for this year's Mosaic project, we emulated the standards of the National Council on Public History and the Oral History Association, in preparation for oral history interviews with members of our extended families and community networks. The results of our work are an introductory Reading Packet and a deep-dive into primary source excerpts in three Document-Based Group Assignments. In the end, we believe these lessons will help students better understand broad themes of immigration and migration history, while also encouraging them to empathize with the community members and narrators in the stories we have compiled.
